Welcome to Castellane in the holiday paradise of the Grand Cayon du Verdon

Our house is on the outskirts of Castellane with the beautiful town center and the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc, this is where the most beautiful part of the Grand Canyon du Verdon begins. It is only a few steps from here to the butcher or baker. And for a visit to a restaurant, you only have to walk around the square, there are various restaurants and bars, but the house is in a quiet location. That means: with us you can feel good and relax - with the special extra of being "right in the middle instead of just being there".

The town of Castellane is located on the Route Napoléon which connects the Mediterranean Sea with Grenoble on the one hand and on the Verdon River between the two reservoirs Lac de Castillon and Lac de Sainte-Croix on the other hand, from this point of view the place is considered the gateway to the Gorges du Verdon , the Grand Canyon du Verdon.

Located at 724 m above sea level on the Verdon river, the town with a good 1,500 inhabitants is considered the starting point for the upper Verdon Gorges and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and has good overnight accommodation with numerous campsites and guesthouses.

Historically, a settlement had emerged after the Roman conquest in the area of the connecting "Via Salinaria" and "Via Ventiana", in the early Middle Ages the city was built high up near the Roc de Castellane, the ruins of 1 Petra, first mentioned around 970 Castellana can still be seen on a saddle on the way to the Notre-Dame-du-Roc chapel. Fortifications were built on the rocky peak and subsequently also in the area of today's town, in the 15th century. a stone bridge was built over the Verdon.
